The flame was shot at 1/600sec at f/5 using a tripod mounted 135mm lens on a Canon DSLR. It was an (amusing) exercise in manual dexterity… I held the match box and a remote shutter release in my left hand. Having set the drive mode to high speed continuous I lit the match with my right hand. 20 matches and hundreds of shots later I perfected the technique and took this image!

The huge Valentine’s Day balloon was tied over The Scoop at More London by Tower Bridge on 16 February. This shot was taken at 1/240sec, f/8, ISO100 with the fixed 23mm lens (with the APS-C sensor it is the full frame equivalent of a 35mm lens). I chose this image as it had a couple romantically walking towards the balloon. I used a motion blur filter in PS to isolate the couple and the balloon. How romantic!

The final image is simply shot at 1/2000 to freeze the movement of the passing van.
