(1948) Hiroshi Sugimoto

Sugimoto is a New York based Japanese photographer and architect. In his series entitled ‘Theatres’ he uses movie-length exposures (ie 2-3 hours) to explore his idea that too much information (the movie images captured over the 2-3 hour period) turns into ‘nothingness’ (the white over-exposed cinema screen). I wonder how he feels about the idea of of Big Data. These days ‘too much information’ often can be turned into new insights.

In the video, ‘Contact: Hiroshi Sugimoto 2’ (Sugimoto, 2009), he explains that his vision and concept of the series comes first and then he will imagine how to capture the images.
