IAP Assignment 4: Reflections Before Tutor Feedback

Demonstration of technical and visual skills – Materials, technical, observational skills, visual awareness, design and compositional skills. (40%)

I’m beginning to sound like a scratched record, but the strict lockdown criteria that I’ve applied to my work for IAP is becoming restrictive. But despite that, I am fairly pleased with the outcome of Assignment 4. When I started taking photographs of my mother’s prawn sandwich habit I had no idea that it could result in a meaningful piece of work. However, exposure to Andy Warhol’s ’60 Last Suppers’ inspired me to create this work.

In terms of technical skills the use of Lightroom to create an 8 x 7 grid, use of NIK post processing software to produce the high contrast black-and-white images, and the bravery to use iPhone images are all aspects that please me.

Quality of outcome – Content, Application of knowledge, presentation of work in a coherent manner, discernment, conceptualisation of thoughts, communication of ideas. (20%)

I am pleased with the outcome. Particularly, having decided to use the clearer Lightroom black and white images, I feel that the images can be read on a number of levels. I feel that whilst the use of the text is subtle it nevertheless allows sufficient access to the work. Looking at the Assignment in the round I am pleased with the comprehensive Notes which I feel provides a good background to the production of the work.

Demonstration of creativity – Imagination, experimentation, invention. (20%)

My Assignment 3 Tutor feedback emphasised the need to improve the documentation of the origination, development and experimentation of my creative ideas. In Assignment 4 I have attempted to address this criticism. In terms of the images, I have explained the genesis of the idea, the creative influences, and details of the presentational options considered. As regards the text I have discussed and explored alternative text combinations with reference to some well-known artists including examples with reasons for rejecting their particular styles.

Context – reflection, research, critical thinking. (20%)

Throughout IAP I have increased the volume of research, and importantly it’s recording, both for the OCA directed research but also personally driven work. In particular, for Assignment 4, I would point to the Tate visit, the review of John Szarkowski’s ‘The Photographer’s Eye‘, Exercise 4.5 Image and Text, and the review of captioning discussed in my Notes to this Assignment.
