IAP Assignment 2: Reflections Before Tutor Feedback

Demonstration of technical and visual skills – Materials, technical, observational skills, visual awareness, design and compositional skills. (40%)

Having established the framing and understood the reflections I pushed the basic idea around. Each image is a single shot with minimal post-processing – slight cropping and colour change to create the cinematic effect. Having lived here for 20 years I was quite astounded by the scene created. I have not used reflections in this way before and certainly not combined reflections with a deliberate movement of the subject out of the frame creating such visually confusing, ghostly images.

Having looked at the images for a few days now I still like them. I wanted to create elliptical, confusing, psychological, moody, nightmarish images portraying the negative emotions that some people must be having during the lockdown. Given that objective, I think the images succeed. Where I would criticise them is that perhaps the basic scene is overdone. Maybe I just found an interesting idea and overplayed it. On the other hand, I wanted to create the impression of repetition which is another word perhaps for boredom. Which we are all no doubt experiencing to some extent.

Demonstration of creativity – Imagination, experimentation, invention. (20%)

I think these images do show quite good imagination, experimentation and invention. Having established the basic idea I spent time experimenting. For example, Lockdown #1 was created by me walking out of a 10-second exposure to create not only a reflection but a ghostly image of the person that created the reflection.

Context – reflection, research, critical thinking. (20%)

As part of my feedback for the CAN module, the assessors seemed to like the way that I annotated images and suggested that I developed this methodology. I have annotated the five images to assess how the images match my original intentions and how they may be interpreted by an audience.

As far as my Learning Log is concerned I am delighted. I have not only done more research for Part 2 but I have Finally begun documenting it properly. The research includes not only OCA directed subjects and suggested reading but a number of self-directed studies including David Hurn, Hélène Amouzou, James Fox and Edward Hopper. As always, the more you put in the more you get out. I’m enjoying this!
