(1956) Paul Graham

In a 2015 video to support the The Whiteness of the Whale exhibition at Pier 24 Photography, San Francisco Graham he discusses how he hopes the photographs might be seen.

He describes how the images move from a ‘classic photographic vision’ which he likens to a ‘spotlight consciousness which selects this one thing out of the whole un-illuminated darkness of life and says “that’s it”’ to a ‘floodlight or lantern’ awareness (Graham, 2016).

He does not seek to capture a decisive moment but to illustrate ordinary life in New York. ‘Our lives aren’t made up of dramas or car crashes… our lives are made up of the humdrum’ (Graham, 2016).
