Richard Sweeney

I recently attended a Photoshop course at West Dean College. While sat at the bar I struck up a conversation with a course tutor by the name of Richard Sweeney. What a fascinating man. His website is:

Richard is a young guy who has/is exhibited around the world and makes a living out of his art. I’m concentrating on the words ‘young’ and ‘makes a living’ deliberately. Perhaps it’s because I’m an accountant but the subject of making a living out of art fascinates me. Like us all, I know hugely talented artists (musicians, actors, photographers, painters etc) that don’t make a living, especially when they are young.

So what is it about Richard that bucks that trend. Well for starters he is hugely talented. His initial concentration was paper sculpture. But he is also a photographer, a musician and an artist. But talent isn’t enough. So, drawing upon my professional inquisitiveness, I kept probing.

My take on Richard’s success is that he has a creative obsession. But most of all he talks of having an unbreakable determination to succeed. Talking to him was inspirational. Examples of his work follow.
